Almost a third of those who spend less than two hours unlocked each day are “doing absolutely nothing with their time in custody,”

Thanks to the Textile Society for awarding me this Thanks to the Textile Society for awarding me this year's first prize in the Dr. Brenda King Prize for Critical Writing for my essay A Stitch in Time: a textile work unpicking our prison system.
Although I left school with no paper qualifications I fell in love with art and a belief in social justice. This prestigious prize for writing illustrates 'where there's a will...'

Preceding the 1948 British- Mandate in Palestine, Preceding the 1948 British- Mandate in Palestine, the use of the traditional embroidery known as Tatreez was a skill passed through generations in which each region, town and village had its own unique style of this type of cross stitch; expressing the wearer’s status, wealth and geographical origin. Using the needlework skills gained through generations of practice, Palestinian women began to depict cartographic representations of pre- 1948 Palestine. These maps celebrate the diversity of styles, symbols and colour of the many regions that now work together in cultural unity, beginning when large numbers of Palestinians moved into refugee camps and regional separations broke down.
These embroideries became a stitched narrative in the power struggle between Palestine and Israel over land rights. Using first hand experiences from interviews with women involved in the making of the Palestinian embroidered maps allowed narratives that showed a shared view and political solidarities. The communal sharing of these textile maps, predominantly within the circle of friends and family, brought with it a ‘grieving creativity’ for a displaced people.
